Zoo Day

Sunday we made our first trip to the zoo as a family. I have been wanting to go for almost a year now and was so happy that we finally did it! We started the day off having a lovely Breakfast (even though it was after noon) at one of our favorite breakfast places, Crickett Cafe. While waiting to get seated we experienced true Oregon Spring weather...sun, rain, hail, sun, hail...
After Brunch, we weren't sure if we should still try the zoo or not since the weather wasn't looking too promising. We decided to drive over and see what the weather was like in that part of town, there was blue sky in that direction so we were still hopeful.
Of course Oliver fell asleep about 15 minutes before we got there, and it was Sunny and beautiful. We debated on going for it or driving back home. We knew if we went home and tried to move O he would wake up so we decided to cut his nap short and go see the animals.
It briefly got a little windy and rainy but shortly cleared up and we had a really beautiful afternoon.
Ready to go!
Mountain Goats
Bobcat.
Sleeping...apparently we were at the zoo during nap time as you will see!
Bear.
Wolf.
Bald Eagles.
Egrets.

This Lovely lady posed for me twice so I had to include both!

Penquins.
Ebenezer.
He was just sitting there, staring at everyone, chewing. What as great was his picture and name were on a plague right in front of him, as if he knew that was his place.
Sleeping Chimp.
he later got up and was making fro some great photo ops, alas he was hogged by another family and I couldn't get any great shots.
Orangutan.
This is my favorite Animal shot of the day. He just was sitting right there watching us and watching me take his picture.

And this is my favorite Oliver shot in awhile. This is his expression on seeing the Orangutan. We were literally only separated by a piece of glass.

Rhino.

Hippos.
It cracked me up that the one Hip-Hop-A-Natamus was standing with his head on the ground sleeping.

Amazon Birds.
Oliver's first taste of Elephant Ear.
He really loved it, don't be fooled by his face!
Graham and the Bushy Beard, he doesn't look THAT angry either...just a little squinty.

Tiger, sleeping.
Unfortunately, most of the Africa animals were not out since it was a little chilly for them. We missed the Lions, Zebras & Giraffes. They are also working on a new Africa exhibit, Predators or Serengeti where you will be able to get up close to the animals just like the Orangutan.
I am really hoping that we can get a membership this year. It pays for itself with your 5th trip not to mention free parking, free zoo concerts, zoo lights at Christmas & Howloween events.
Oliver fell asleep on our way home and I was afraid that if I put him down in his crib he would wake up and cry and dinner was still about an hour away. I sat with him on the couch for a few minutes and then asked Graham to help me make the couch into a little bed for him. We moved th cushions and pushed the ottoman up against couch and he was so exhausted that he didn't even open his eyes.
It was really difficult to wake him for dinner and he has a little bit of a rough time until the food was in front of him.
All in all, it was a good fun day and I loove forward to more of them this summer.
